Screenwest commences Film Friendly training, making it easier for interstate and international productions to film in Western Australia and take advantage of the state’s diverse locations, world-class crew and extensive financial incentives.

Screenwest headed to Broome to provide Film Friendly training for local councils and Pathway to Screen Industry Training for regional practitioners last week. This is the first stop of Screenwest’s state-wide regional roadshow.

The regional roadshow’s purpose is to engage closely with more screen practitioners across the state, taking away the usual geographical challenges. The roadshow includes major focus on skills and development and production attraction across the state to encourage practitioners and filming in Western Australia.

Gabrielle Cole, Screenwest’s Production Attraction & Services Coordinator, provided Film Friendly Film Liaison Officer training for the Shire of Broome, Shire of Derby West Kimberley and Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, which is the first step to officially establish them as Film Friendly locations. Participation in the Screenwest Film Friendly Western Australia program provides production companies with assurance that certified communities are industry-savvy and sends a clear message that they are serious about attracting their business.

The course covered training in the following areas:

  • Film Friendly around the country
  • Film Friendly: understanding the resources
  • Key Departments and their needs, including art department, production management, unit management and locations
  • Working with filmmakers/regional consultants
  • Location image guidelines & reelscout

Film Friendly Western Australia was launched in March 2019 with the release of resources for filmmakers, regions and communities.

Screenwest CEO Willie Rowe said that the roadshow is an important next step for Screenwest. “Building capacity across the state is extremely important to ensure that we grow as an industry and can meet the demand of incoming productions, especially those that shoot in regional areas, which we have seen an incredible upswing in through our Western Australian Regional Film Fund.”

Eva Di Blasio, Screenwest’s Talent Development Manager met as many regional practitioners as possible while in Broome, through hosting a Pathways to the Screen Industry training and one-on-one meetings. The Pathways session was aimed at emerging and mid-career practitioners looking to take next steps in their careers and the different screen funding opportunities in WA.

The roadshow will travel across all of WA’s nine regional development commissions. Screenwest, over the last 4 years, has been working across the state through the collaboration and administration of the $16 million Western Australian Regional Film Fund (WARFF), supported by Royalties for Regions, Screenwest and Lotterywest through the WA Government.

The regional roadshow continues with both Pathways to the Screen Industry and Film Friendly training sessions in the Pilbara in November, with more details to be released soon on the next location.
