The TAG team recently joined other industry leaders at the grand opening of Screen Queensland’s newest Studios in the Cairns’ suburb of Portsmith. The event marked a significant milestone in the region’s emergence as a key player in Australia’s screen sector.
Renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes, including tropical rainforests, beaches, and secluded island paradises, Far North Queensland provides a perfect backdrop for film and television productions. The establishment of Screen Queensland Studios in Cairns further confirms the region’s position as a premier destination for the entertainment industry.
Located within a revamped warehouse-style retail store, the screen hub boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a 1,070-square-metre sound stage, cutting-edge sound recording studio, editing suites, comprehensive set construction and wardrobe facilities, and an events space.
TAG had previously visited Cairns in 2023 during the studio’s construction phase, and the team was thrilled to see the impressive transformation when they returned.
During their visit, the team engaged with local hoteliers and suppliers, sharing insights and requirements for upcoming productions. Additionally, they took the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region’s beauty with their families, enjoying memorable visits to iconic attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef aboard Reef Magic. They also visited the rainforest and experienced the incredible Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda.
Reflecting on her experience, Alli Pratt, Head of Production, TAG expressed her love for Far North Queensland as a filming location and emphasised the significance of the new studio in attracting future productions. She remarked, “Exploring the incredible offerings of the region was a fabulous experience. Far North Queensland’s natural beauty combined with the new world-class studio facilities makes it a top choice for filmmakers.”
